OFFSET: SET IT OFF - IS REALLY GOOD (ALBUM REVIEW)
Offset is back with his second studio album "SET IT OFF". Personally I wasn't too hyped going into this album, because I've previously felt that the solo albums by the Migos members have not lived up to the standard of their collective albums early on in their careers. However out of all the members, I definitely feel like Offsets solo career shown the most consistency in quality. So going in to this album, my hopes were not the highest but I expected an alright Trap project, with similar soundscapes to what made the sound popular in the late 2010's.
However Offset really surprised me on this album, especially in the start of the album. Sound wise it really shows that Offset grown in this project. From previously being in a lane of Trap music that very much sounds the same, with choppy flows, heavy autotune vocals and trapdrums, to now on "SET IT OFF" showing more wider sounds, I'll have to admit I am impressed. When it comes to the production on the album, it partially sounds more like a Travis Scott or Metro Boomin album. Which of course still is in the Trap and modern HipHop lane, but whit more impressive soundscapes than a lot other Trap melodies. But I think Offset shows good ability to rap on these different beats than he's previously shown. My personal favourites from the project are the opening intro "ON THE RIVER (INTRO)", which has a really nice jazz sample whit hard hitting drums which I could only wish was a longer song. Also "FAN" has a really cool dark sound with a lot of flow switches and cool drum patterns. As well the two tracks with Travis Scott and Don Toliver, are some really cathy songs that sounds like it could have come from the JACKBOYS. Also on songs like "PRINCESS CUT" Offset showcase some more melodic flows and singing, that maybe more been carried by Quavo in the trios music. Yet again I been impressed by how well Offset executed this.
Nevertheless, there are also songs like "DISSOLVE" where the melodic performance just isn't good. Unfortunately when it comes to the whole album experience, the really good highs on the project gets shadowed by the weaker songs. Once again I feel like it's a shame that these albums are so long. With the project being 21 songs, it's so hard to keep the quality to the same level as it starts off with. Instead it gets filled up by songs that are just okay and sound like a lot of music that we've previously heard throughout the popularity of this rap style. Would "SET IT OFF" been cut down to about 12 to 15 songs, it could easily been a great album. But now it ends me feeling like it's a good album with some really cool highs, but lacks the consistency. That being said, this is still my favorite solo project thats been released by the Migos group. So it was still a enjoyable listen, even though it leaves me feeling that it had potential to be a lot more.
